than retrofitting an existing vehicle, Mercedes-Benz builds the Guard
S500
from the ground up, adding only 880 pounds to the standard
Mercedes-Benz
S500. You'd expect nothing less from a company that's been building

Ballistics
In a secured location at the Guard assembly
area, specialists test the composite security glass to verify
resistance to direct hits by rounds
up to and including .44 Magnum caliber. The body of the Mercedes-Benz
Guard
S500 Special Production Vehicle is also rigorously tested. Over 120
shots
are fired from .44 Magnum and .357 Magnum caliber handguns at 45°
and
90° angles into glass and metal surfaces from a distance of 5
meters (16.4
feet), which is when a bullet reaches its maximum velocity.

Certification Program
Mercedes-Benz ensures that every Mercedes-Benz
Guard S500
meets the standards for Protection Level B4 rating* by the testing
authority
Beschussamt in Ulm, Germany, a third-party independent testing and
certification
service. To achieve this certification - also known as European
Standard
B4 - the Mercedes-Benz Guard S500 must be able to withstand armed
attack
from handguns up to .44 Magnum caliber. The Mercedes-Benz Guard S500
also
meets all of the legendary standards for finish, function, reliability
and
performance that have been the hallmarks of Mercedes-Benz for more than
115
years.

Run-flat Tires
These special tires can continue traveling
regardless of
low tire pressure. Even if the tires are fully deflated, you can drive
15
miles or more (depending on road conditions) at up to 50 mph. Plus, an
onboard
monitoring system can display the pressure in all tires on an in-dash
readout.

Composite Security Glass
Made of several layers including an inner
polycarbonate sheet,
the window glass is designed to resist handgun-projectiles up to and
including
.44 Magnum caliber, and its polycarbonate layer helps absorb dangerous
glass
splinters. Designed also for minimal distortion, the glass looks
ordinary
from outside.

Integrated Armor Plating
Special armor-steel plating has been integrated
into the
structure of the car in critical areas.

Overlapping System
To help make even critical zones safer, the
meticulously tested
overlapping system at all four doors is designed to substantially
reduce
the possibility of bullets passing through the door and window seams
and
into the passenger compartment.

Self-sealing Fuel Tank
If this optional fuel tank is punctured, a
special exterior coating on the tank, designed to reseal the hole
caused by splinters in seconds,
is automatically activated.

Enhanced Suspension
The suspension, springs and shock absorbers on
the Mercedes-Benz Guard S500 are tuned and the rear axle is made with
reinforced steel to maintain
ride comfort despite the added weight of the armor.

Dedicated Guard Production
Rather than retrofit an existing car,
Mercedes-Benz builds each Mercedes-Benz Guard S500 from the ground up.
The body structure comes from the standard assembly line to a dedicated
Guard production area. A specially
trained team of experts hand-integrates special armor-steel plating and
composite
security glass with reinforcements to the structure and suspension. The
safety
and performance systems such as ESP and Brake Assist are also specially
programmed.
This is where protection is built into the Mercedes-Benz Guard S500 –
the
kind of protection possible only with factory armoring.
